How did I get here? How did this happen to me?
These are crucial questions I get from clients on a regular basis. In addition, why did my career seem so certain one day, yet so uncertain on another?

I answer these questions by asking a question of my own: “Are you listening to what your career is telling you?”

Most people don’t listen to themselves. And, when things go wrong in their career, they don’t understand why. In many cases, it’s because they did not listen to their inner voice; a voice that does not lie. Your inner voice is vital because it tells you which path to take and which path to avoid. Listen to your inner voice and you’ll be alright. Ignore the advice, and you will have problems in your career. Can it be that simple? The answer is yes.

So, How Do You Listen To What Your Career Is Telling You? Follow These 3 Steps Below:

1. Ask Yourself Why You Are Not Listening

There may be good reasons not to listen to yourself at this point in your career. Maybe you took a job because you needed a job and now you have to keep it. Maybe you needed a certain salary or a company name on your resume to make your work history look better. Taking a job that is not right for you just to pay the bills or advance your career is not always wrong; it just hurts and could delay what’s right. The clients I talk to that are the unhappy in their career, the ones who are questioning themselves daily, the ones whose self-esteem is the lowest, are those who said they would do something in their career they knew was not right, but hoped it would work out in the end. Are you listening to yourself? If not, ask yourself why. Then ask yourself if not listening is worth the stress and constant dissatisfaction you feel inside.

2. Decide to Listen

Listening is not always an easy thing to do. Think about the conversations you have with others on a regular basis. Are you fully present listening to what they have to say? Or, are you distracted thinking about something else? So, if you are having trouble listening to the people around you, imagine how hard it is for you to listen to what your gut is trying to tell you. Stop and take a deep breath. Ask yourself what you want in your career. How does it feel when you hear what you say? If you feel strong and grounded, you have your answer. You’ve really listened. If you feel fear and uncertainly, you have not hit it yet. Keep asking and listening until your answer rings true for you in your heart. Many people ask me what they should do next in their career. I tell them the answer is within them and has been there the whole time. They just have to tap into it.

3. Create Your Plan Of Attack

You may be in a situation that you currently have no control over. Maybe you are in a job you are overqualified for. Maybe you are working for a person or a company that does not align with your goals or values in life. Maybe you have been unemployed for a while with no real job prospects in sight. This does not mean you are trapped in your situation forever. It means that this is where you are right now. The economy will pick up one day. When? No one knows for sure, but it will. This is when you will have more choices. So, get ready. Write down what you want in your career and the specific steps you will take to get there. Once you have your plan, get moving in that direction.

The traditional concept of a job is based on the industrial model, of large employers. This concept is being replaced with a new definition of work: work that needs to be done, rather than set duties, hours, and permanence. The lack of a job anchor affects us psychologically. Rather than fight the trend, learn how to thrive.

What is happening? Permanent jobs in all areas (defense, health care, white and blue collar) are being replaced with temps, contract workers, job sharing, self-employment, part-time work, piece-meal work. If you can ride the wave, you might have more leisure with even more income, without the headaches of office politics. Skills required in this new marketplace are writing, reading, arithmetic, computer, and above all – work-search skills!

How can we make sure we end up in the winners column?
We need to develop the four P’s: Purpose, a Picture of the future, a Plan for action, and a Part to play.We will have to be market-driven due to the project nature of work.

In addition, we need to take a look at your D.A.T.A. Your Desires: what you want in life, your Abilities: what you are really good at, your Temperament- what kind of person are you, and in what situations do you thrive, and finally your Assets: What Advantages do you have, or what aspects of your history or circumstances could you turn to your advantage.

The new marketplace takes a combination of savvy, skills and follow through. Technical skills are great, but they need to be combined with marketing and good interpersonal skills, Furthermore, you can resist the winds of change, or as Seneca said centuries ago, “The fates guide those who go willingly; those who don’t, they drag.”

The winners are:
•	Workers who know how to market their services
•	People who see change as opportunity and seize the moment
•	People who are flexible, can easily adapt to change
•	Proactive job seekers

Those who won’t fare so well include:
•	Those who have been on the same job for a long time and are out of touch with the new marketplace
•	People who have difficulty selling their services
•	Workers with outdated skills and/or without the means to upgrade or adapt their skills
•	People who are “married” to a specific industry, particularly if that industry is dying
•	Individuals who are motivated primarily by security and structure.

Job or ‘career’ fairs are a popular and useful way to get employers and potential employees in the same room at the same time! All well and good, but the larger fairs can be so vast and overwhelming, you might just need your own ‘Job Fair’ strategy to make sure you and your CV receive the attention you deserve, from the employers you want to be seen by.

Job Fairs can mean a lot of walking, standing, and waiting around. You are always advised to dress professionally and appropriately, but it could be tempting to get it wrong with the footwear. Comfortable does not have to mean, scruffy or inappropriate. Look after your feet, but make sure you are in line with a professional look from top to toe.

Take a sneaky peek. Observe the employers stand and others who are in it for a few minutes before getting in line. Whilst waiting, you can make your own assumptions going forward as to what you think will be a good ‘in’ based on what you have noticed. Pick up brochures and reading materials to read and ‘gen ‘up on the company whilst you wait. This is true especially when you are trying to capture international opportunities like Jobs in Dubai or London jobs. Try and see and hear as much as you can. Pick up on questions and responses between the employers and the candidates.

When you’ve done your homework and are sure you actually want to get in line for this particular organisation, try and formulate an innovative line of conversation. A unique ‘pitch’ on yourself and why you want to work for the company may help you in being remembered later amongst the hundreds of other potential applicants the interviewers may have seen that day. Be sure to ask lots of questions. It’s not just them interviewing you. The company needs to fit the bill also.

After your interview, don’t forget to thank the employer warmly. Be sure to take their business card so that you can follow up in the future. Make sure to make that call or write that email within 3 days. Many senior executives travel and are very busy, so don’t expect a response immediately.

Don’t forget that first impressions count. It is important to treat meetings at job fairs as seriously as you would a formal interview.

You are encouraged to attend career fairs as they provide an excellent avenue for obtaining information about different career fields, specific company culture and work experience opportunities.

Remember – it is never too early to start researching and collecting information on your career options. You may not know exactly what you want to do once you graduate, but having a sense of which opportunities are available can be helpful when it comes to choosing modules and deciding on extra-curricular activities.
